Tim Butler M’08. As fire chief of the Saint Paul Fire Department, Tim Butler is in charge of the operations and administration of the 475-person fire department. He has been recognized for his commitment to safety programs and training—he helped design a tuition-free program for low-income and minority residents that helps them attain CPR and first-responder certification and become eligible for EMT certification and college credit. I will walk into meetings the next day and apply some of the concepts that I've used in class.

I've developed almost like a learning culture within my own organization based on this program. Our online students get the same kind of support that our in-person, face-to-face students get. Instructors and professors in this program have been amazing in making themselves available. Our faculty all work in the field during the day.

They cared about what I was learning and how I needed to learn. And our students report almost right away that they are more connected, or at least as connected, as they would feel if they were in a classroom setting.

The community in this program, I think, is almost stronger than being on a campus. The online programs really facilitate people with flexibility, accessibility, diversity in the programs we offer to them. Just having the experience, the connections, the networking has made it invaluable to me in my future and the career that I want to pursue.
