Army ROTC is back on the Utah State University campus. As for the Air Force ROTC, it never left. As a land-grant college, said Maj. Rand Curtis, the officer in charge of Army ROTC on campus, USUs charter includes the provision that it furnish military training. Unfortunately, USU had been through a number of bad years where their numbers just werent very strong, said Curtis. Even though the program had a long history at USU, Army market strategists believed the University of Utah, BYU and Weber State were better positioned to attract cadets to the program.

We turned the building over to the Air Force, folded up the flags and went away, Curtis stated. But in August 2001 the Army reestablished its ROTC program on campus through a partnership program with Weber State.

Curtis was enthusiastic about the startup. Its exceeded everybodys expectations, he said. Our enrollment numbers are higher than anyone thought they would be, and the strength of the program, the quality of the cadets in the program is higher than anyone anticipated. Unless they are in uniform, the 148 Army and Air Force ROTC cadets blend in with the student body. Yet theyre actually on a different track from the typical student. If they complete the ROTC program, when they graduate they will have guaranteed jobs waiting for them in the Army or Air Force. Fink explained that the 89 cadets 13 of them women will be commissioned officers when they receive their bachelors degrees and will begin serving four years of active duty service.
